david john battrick bsg is a gregorian friar in province II of the brotherhood of saint gregory, a vowed christian community in the anglican communion and a priest in the anglican church of australia. he is the rector of the parish of east maitland in the anglican diocese of newcastle and a canon of christ church cathedral in the city of newcastle. he lives on the edge of the beautiful hunter valley with luisa and their four sons.
david john was born in england and grew up in woodford green where he was active in the parish of all saints’ woodford wells. he was educated at wells primary school and bancrofts school in greater london, and went on to read theology in oxford, focusing on issues relating to theology and social context and applied theology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
as the assistant academic registrar and programme manager for international degree programmes at the oxford centre for mission studies he was engaged in the development, initial delivery and quality assurance of theology degrees in africa, asia, eastern europe and the united kingdom.
during this time david john was active in the parish of saint mary magdalen in the centre of oxford, and a member of the guild of servants of the sanctuary.
david john was formed for ordained ministry at saint stephen’s house in oxford and was ordained by archbishop peter carnley in the anglican diocese of perth where he ministered in parishes and as the ministry development officer of the northern region. he then served concurrently as the diocesan ministry development officer and founding director of the newcastle school of theology for ministry. he also served as the honorary associate priest in the anglican parish of merewether.
he is a former director of the freire institute and continues his involvement as a member of the international reference panel.
within the diocese he is an elected member of the diocesan council, cathedral board, clergy emoluments board, parish incumbency board and one of the bishop’s examining chaplains. he is the chair of the diocesan ecumenical commission and diocesan media committee.
david john is a member of the australian association for mission studies, a priest associate of the holy house of the shrine of our lady of walsingham and a chaplain to the sovereign order of the orthodox knights hospitaller of saint john of jerusalem.
he is a life friend of alton abbey, a member of the anglo catholic history society, and a life member of the guild of all souls. he and his family are now australian citizens.
